Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst, the formaldehyde enthusiast and diamond skull creator has admitted in an Independent interview today that his art is over priced.

I therefore announce that he is now the first recipient of the No Shit, Sherlock award for services to obviousness.

In the interview he said his artwork “was over-priced”.

This rare admission came following a (non) sale in New York of a painting of four skulls expected to fetch $3m. It failed to attract a single bid.

Maybe now is finally the time for artists to realise that splashing a few specks of paint on a canvass, mixing it with blood and faeces and expecting to make millions from it isn’t going to work anymore.
Either the super rich are becoming savvy to it, or they’re just a bit fed up with all this alternative art. After all, there are only so many stuffed sharks one people can want in their home… You’d think.

Final thought: Hirst says “what an artist wants [is] for people to hang the works on their wall”. Now, for a man who is famous for stuffing dead animals I’d like to know how best to hang one of those on your wall. If anyone knows please to tell me.
